A Department of Homeland Security Security (DHS) notice Saturday says TPS cannot be maintained for Nepal after the destruction of June 24 this year.
DHS Secretary Kristi Noem said beneficiaries will be given a 60-day transition period until August 5, reported in Himalayan Times.
TPS allows immigrants from designated countries with no other legal status to remain in US to 18 months and obtain legal job permissions when social conditions prevent a safe return.
Nepal was originally appointed for TPS on June 24, 2015, for a period of 18 months, at the end of the powerful earthquake resulted in a large, but temporarily, destroying living conditions.
DHS expands call on October 26, 2016, for an additional 18-month period and several occasions later. “After reviewing country conditions and consulting appropriate US government agencies, the Secretary of TPS calls as required by law,” as notice. According to DHS, about 12,700 Nepalese nationals have TPS, with more than 5,500 generated legal permanent residents in the US.
More than 7,000 Nepalis should return to the country once TPS ends.
