In 2012 were in the hut with a morgue in orbit.
No press release. No fanfare. Only one sealed, soft sight of a shipment of the cargo at the International Space Station (issues) along the food and scientific repair. It is officially called people who remain unit’s content (HRCU). In unspecified eye it is like a shipping bag for frozen shipment. But with this it marks something that is greater than: a primary progress in preparation for death outside the earth.
As a child, I think about how to go to the bathroom with zero gravity. Today, the decades later, as a forensic pathologist and a perennial applicant in astronaut corps in Nasaa, I find myself darker, more stressful question:

What happens when an astronaut dies there? Will they take home, or leave them? If they expire in the rest of the world, is that their last rest area? If they have passed into a spacecraft or space station, their inhibitions will be rejected in orbit-or sent to an intersellar velocity?
NASA, it has been done, began doing most of the answers. And no one is soon. Because the question itself is no longer if There will be a die in space – but WHEN.
A Gray Corps
There is no astronaut to die the natural cause of the world. In 1971 the three-person crew of Soviet Soyuz 11 mission asphalt in space If their spacecraft depressurized before the automatic reentry of atmosphere – but their deaths were discovered once the spacecraft reached the land. Similarly, Every US SpaceFlight Felatality to Date occurred within the atmosphere of land under gravity, oxygen and a clear national jurisdiction. But planned missions are longing, with destinations beyond low-adle orbit. And the astronaut corps of NASA is getting old. The average age currently surrounds about 50-year-old brackets in which natural death can be statistically related, even for clean buffs of fitness. Death in space is no longer an experimental thinking. It’s a probability curve – and the ones know it.

If a person dies on boarding ISS now, their body will be placed in HRCU, which is then sealed and certainly in a place without waiting at the end of the world.
HRCU itself A modified version in a military grade bag designed to keep the person remaining in dangerous environments. It includes refrigeration systems to seize issues with slow decay and includes contents of the odor control and re-zippers for polite head access. There are straps to secure the body in a chair for return, and patches for National National tags and flags.
Cadaver trials held in 2019 at Sam Houston State University proved to be strongly systematic. Some versions made for more than 40 days before the obstacle ectomposition is breached. NASA is taught the bag from 19 feet to settle a hard landing.
But it is not used in space. And because not yet knowing how a body invited the actual microgramvity (or, for that matter, in the moon) is, is there any HRCE to preserve whether the HRCE stores tissue enough for a forensic autopsy.
This is a disturbing knowledge information, because in space, a death is not a sad loss – it is also a significant point of data. Does an astronaut have a fluke of their physiology, or unavoidable cosmic stroke is not good luck – or in turn it is a result of a space of residential systems in a space system to find and upright? Incoming life can depend on understanding what is wrong, by a proper postmortem investigation.
But no medical examiner in orbit. So NASA trained the crew of something called in-mission forensic Sample Collection Protocol. Astrauts in the agency’s space can be avoided talking about it, but they all have this memorization: Documenting everything, in a good guide to NASA. Picture of the body. Collect blood and vitreous fluid, as well as hair samples and tissue. It may only be the remains left in HRCU.
NASA is also preparing for death outside the station – in the spacewalks, the moon or deep space missions. If a member of the crew dies in the vacuum but gets their residues, the body is wrapped in a specially designed space in Spoud.
The goal is not only a technical object in contamination. It is also psychological, as a means of preserving dignity. In all “first” is any suffering in the space agency expected, the first person to be killed by a satellite feed is not in their midst.

Such actions are also related to NASA plans for the off-world mourning; Memorial and Memorial Protocols are now about the official crew training. If a death occurs, the survivor astronauts are intended to maintain a simple ceremony to honor the falls – then continue their mission.
Unexpected places
So far we just covered the questions “Easy” are NASA and others still awake to the greater.
Consider the issue of authority in a death and mortal left. In the ISS, simply: the deceased country of the astronaut house remains jurisdiction. But that explanation went away while destinations grow older and the journeys are more different: What will happen to spacen-agency mission missions, or Mars? How rules change for commercial or multinational spaceflights-or, for that matter, the Private Spaco in Space and Interplanetary households that viewed by Elon Musk, Jeff Bezos and other multibillionaries?
NASA and its companions start drafting frameworks, like Artemis Accords-Sama signed by over 50 countries to manage space in space. But even those who do not speak many close details of death.
What happened, if the foul plays are suspected?

Of course, not everyone can be planned for the first. And the NASA creates a unique job to keep the astronauts in the orbit alive. But as many people travel in space, and as the forefinger of long journeys and more destinations, it is a prophetic certainty of returning.
If that happens, it’s not a tragedy. It’s a test. An attempt at our systems, our behavior and ability to adapt to a new mortality measure. In some, NASA preparation for astrona’s death may be as a morbid, even silly – but it is not more than reality.
The space is not care of the course, when it is gaining a lot of lives. But we are. And to rise at that moment with respect, rigor and grace mean not only the policy of more – but what a person is meant to be there.
