Methanesatat, built and powered by Nonprofit Environmental Defense Fund (EDF), launched in March 2024 as part of Spacex’s Transporter-10 missions. The spacecraft is designed to teach methane hotspots around the world – specifically, those produced in oil and gas production – and provide free data analysis about data sources.
Now, after one year collecting that data, satellite will no longer surgery. “On Friday, June 20, Methanesat Mission Operations have lost contact with Methanesat. We know all the options, and they are likely to be not recovered,” EDF says in a statement on Tuesday (July 1).
