In the editor: The end of “the late performance of Stephen Colbert” is likely not the result of some political takedowns from the right (“The late evening is dead? This is a Qieter thing, more subtle and perhaps worse: evolution is how we wasted the comedy in the 21st century.
Colbert is a Master Craftsman – his satire is razor razor, torn and always asks more than a passing chuckle. He is not a punchline artist; She is a storyteller. But the truth is, we now live in a world trained to scroll. The funny, like all all, now given to 20-second blow and if not immediately the hook, the viewer disappears.
It’s not a failure – it’s Darwinism. Attention is new money, and the late-night format, even in its traditional form, is struggling to survive an ecosithm of algorithms and autoplay.
