AI may automate some government paperwork, but it has serious hazards

Many countries explored how artificial intelligence can help all from tax processing to determine benefits of benefit. But a survey shows citizens not as enthusiastic as their governments – and it can do real risks for democracy.
“Only focus on the short term efficiency that has taken pleasant technology risks that prompts public backlash and contributed a long decreased trust in democratic trust and legitimate,” as Alexander Wuttke In the Ludwig Maximilian University of Munich in Germany.
Wuttke and his partners ask about 1200 people in the UK to share their feelings about government actions where a person or an AI is in charge of the work. These hypothetical scenarios include processing tax, approving or rejecting benefits and making risk assessments if those who are risk qualified for bail.
Some people are told how to repair AI in government recovery – but others have learned benefits and risks related to AI. These risks include difficulty understanding how the AI decisions, growing trust in AI government to be less likely to change a lot of time and lack of citizens to communicate.
If people know the risks associated with AI, they report an important reduction in their governmental trust and a sense of loss of control. For example, the percentage of participants reporting the loss of their government’s democratic control has been increased from 45 percent over 81 percent in which government is more dependent on the AI for the management of specific tasks.
The proportion of people asking little AI government also later adds to participants to know about the risks of 85 respectively and government benefits and risks using AI.
Despite these results, democratic governments can use AI in responsible ways to remain trust in citizens Hannah Quay-de la Vallee In the center for Washington DC democracy and technology. But he says that there are some success stories in the government so far. Meanwhile, there are “some cases of failure” – and stakes in these cases will be high.
For example, state state efforts state in automating the processing of public benefits that cause thousands of people wrongly hired for fraud. Some of the people ended up to file for bankruptcy or lose their homes. “Government mistakes have a lot of, long-term effects,” Quay-de la Vallee said.
