Inserted between two large buildings on the hills of Nevada Desert, 805 retired EV batteries lie in smooth shape, and each wrapped in white tarps – and hides in simple sight.

Redwood materials announced Thursday at an event of sparks, Nevada facility launching a thousand recycling batteries on the recycling companies with the AI data recycling.
The New Business, Called Redwood Energy, is kicking off with Partner Crusoe, a Startup Straubel invested in 2021. The old evs, which are not yet ready for recycling, store energy generated from an adjacent solar array. The system, producing 12 MW of Power and has 63 MWH in capacity, sending power to a AIB data to AIB, the first site of the Stargate Project.
Redwood’s redwood collection operation scale progresses. Redwood says it recovered more than 70% of all used or thrown battery packs in North America. Now, it processes more than 20 GWH in batteries every year – the equivalent of 250,000 EVs. Apparently these stockpiling batteries are not ready for recycling, with more than 1 gigawt-time amounts in its inventory. In the coming months, it is expected to receive a 4 gigawt-time.
By 2028, the company says it is planning to deploy 20 gigawt-time grid-scale storage, which put it on track to be the most repurposer used battery packs used.
Strubel trust in an effort is evident in every detail of launch activity. To describe Redwood’s commitment – and by extension, strubel – all about production, from microgrid projection lights and music.
“We want to go to all,” Shubel said, breaking a wide toothy smile. Splash effects for the event, Microgrin setup with crusoe is not a demonstration project. Firubel says it’s an operation that raises income, built in four months, and one useful. He added that even more than this will be given to other customers this year.
“I think it has the potential to grow faster than the core business recycling,” he said.
Redwood materials are in an expanding tear in recent years. The company, raised $ 2 billion in private fundsestablished in 2017 in the strubel, former Tesla CTO and current board member, to make a rounded supply chain.
Started by the company by recycling scrap from making battery cells as well as consumer electronics such as cell phone batteries and laptop computers. After processing these discarded items and retrieval materials such as Cobalt, Nickel and Lithium common mines, Redwood gives back to Panasonic and other customers. Over time, the company has also evolved to recycle and to make corruption. Redwood will go out $ 200 million income Of 2024, mostly from the sale of battery materials such as meetings.
The company’s footprint also grows, and more than front of Carson City, Nevada Hedkuwarter. Toyota, Panasonic, and GM deals are locked, starting to build a Fertilizer in South Carolinaand Makes a take in Europe.
Redwood energy is the next step – and one who is not tied to setting its systems to be off-grid. Retired EV batteries can be run by air and solar, or they can be tied to the grid. In case of crasoe project, the system is run by solar.
“There is no intention of green purposes here,” says CTO Colin Campbell during a microgrid tour. “This is a great economic choice to happen too no carbon.”
The business model deals a long challenge to the energy storage sector. For more than a decade, companies promise to build grid-scale storage from used EV batteries, but they are the only material in a small amount. Redwood, which started it as a battery company and recycling company, producing a new line promise to give gigawatts more needed energy storage in just a few years.
“It really shows what the economic hierarchy is in the garbage,” Jessica Dunn, is a battery expert in union with stake scientists, told the techcrunch. That a large recycler is like redwood that recognizes profit potential to repurposed EV batteries shown “when the end of life,” he added.
Repursion of batteries is a clear business opportunity for redwood, but it can also be a business requirement. Redwood was built to build a supply chain to control the predicted wave of used EV batteries to hit the market. But that wave is not determined as quickly predicted by some.
“If Redwood did not enter the repurposing market, then they could not get a part from the changed battery. It should still wait for the batteries to retire. Meaning, other companies’ cuts in the grid-scale of the grid-scale.
Strubel recognizes it, found in an interview that in many ways early redwood materials began.
“We started early early, and in a way we started to go before Redwood,” he said, found the company at the beginning of incoming waves in EVs.
The current recycling market situation promotes challenge. “Today, the recycling market is most scraping in Gama, Consumer Electronics, and EV batteries failing under guarantee,” says Dunn. That’s enough for processing over 20 gigawatt-hours each year. But these are the pales in comparison with 350 gigawatt-hours of EVS today and 150 stages are expected to hit the road each year.
Redwood currently has a 175-acre campus recycling facility in sparks, Nevada, and it develops a 600-acre facility In Charleston, South Carolina. The latter remanufacture cathode and anode copper foil, which both have critical minerals that US wants to remain within its boundaries.
The company has previously stated it is able to make 100 accomplishments each year of assembly active material and anode foil at the end of this year. By the end of the decade, it expects production to hit 500 gigawt-time.
