Last month, a publicist invited me to see killers in a theater in St.. Paul, Minnesota, near my residence. I immediately asked questions. The first is: Why do murderers – one of the remaining American bands with arena and heading festivals – doing a 2,500 capacity capacity? Obviously, a bank pays them to play an exclusive concert for credit card holders. Not so stone ‘n’ roll, clear, but I don’t have any problem. No matter what, I have never seen the murderers play before, despite listening to them, outside, for more than two decades. It looks like an extraordinary opportunity.
But I have other waiting questions. Who do those who kill this point? You have flowers Brandon, the Flamboyant and the Frontman, and Ronnie Vannucci Jr., Powerhouse and charismatic drummer. And then there are two two men, moving freely outside the band. . When they leave Hot fuss In 2004, they were known as a Sorta Baki Live Act. But over time, as they stopped having “Mr. Brightside” -Sized hits, they progressed (I was told) a power galvanizing on stage. A U2 for the floor of the casino, a band on the road for those who thank the sparkly jackets.
In the end, the most critical question of all: What is the murderer? Despite everything, I was shocked. I always want to write about them. They have a quality many of my favorite artists share: their failures and misteps are always fun than their wins. This is a good fodder for a music critic. I may not always like their records, but I am happy to heal them. There is an aspect of roller-coaster in their catalog. Hot fuss One of the best debut albums in the 21st century, But there is a special place in my heart For critical mocking (although somewhat rehab) the follow-up, Sam’s city. Records after the more checker, but usually have at least two or three perfect bombastic rock airthems, such as “a dustin favale” or “runaway.” In 2020s, they make a straightforwardly incredible return of 2020 innings Lending to Mirage and then in any way it is aimed Machine pressurea song cycle that seems to try the flowers to make his own version of La Garage ’83 Garage Sessions.
But four years ago today. And murderers also err in an uncertain wilderness. Flowers announced two dogs solo and force his band not to set a record “Unless it’s the best.” Of 2024, they run on Hot fuss The anniversary performances in their Las Vegas town. And now, here they are played a show for the bank’s customers’ customers. Oh, and I’m too. I told the publicist I have.
Let me say ahead: The show last night and I love it. If you get the chance to see murderers play a special performance for credit card holders in a theater, I can strongly. Here, I’m a little worried that they can do some kind of “close” unexplored performance, given to the environment. Which is precisely what I don’t want from this band. Your gratitude for murderers is completely all if you want musical melodrama in the highest order. For most of my musical music peers, Brandon’s flowers sing about the ride behind a storm to “you’re young” more. But not for me. The killers also have their way because of the exception of some selected icons (mentioned U2 and Bruce), only a few ready and go to that place.
Grateful, murderers have come to this show again. They played like them in Madison Square Garden. (That includes the number to the level that can be heard with twin towns of pastures.) Their stone posting is never angry. They beat electrical behaviors, standing in amplifiers during Guitar Solos, and thrown drumsticks to the audience. They shot confetti in the air not once, but twice. And it fits on the songs, so many of them know hits, which are as big and undeniable as before.
Springsene recently called flowers “One of the most beautiful, pure voices of all rock ‘n’ roll.” Before this concert, I think hyperbole. I still think it’s hyperbole, even if I know that the ball shorter church today. Flowers are, at least, about a small fraternity of true more active active singers. If Bruce is the boss, then the flowers are the host. That’s what he called his own some songs in the set. “Then, we are the killers,” he said, “And we are in the service industry.” Immersion of humility is the purest Vegas Lounge Serer, such as blue suit flowers. But his vocals are contrary to the lounge-y hackery. They are a testament to clean the Mormon alive – they are not only preserved in Hot fuss Amber, they actually get better over time. So, score one for bruce music critic.
As for Vannucci, it is rare for drummer to be the second most magnetic presence of stage. . But the starters of murderers remain in tones. They have what I want to call “Tom Petty Set,” a collection of songs (between 14 and 18) that you can line up with an audience. It doesn’t matter where you play, or how your last album has been made, or when listeners have a casual work familiar. If you have “The Tom Petty Set,” you have songs that everyone knows. And they work only in spaces where many people gather. The killers have that: “Someone told me,” “It is a smile like this,” “All these things I have done,” “When you were young,” they were called murderers for a reason.
And then there is “Mr. Brightside,” the most fatal of all. When I interviewed the flowers In 2021, I asked if he was sick of playing this song. It’s a question stock of rock stock, and the flowers naturally say no. “I heard it through the hearts of the people in the area,” he said. “Some of them, this is their first time to see this song alive, and so I can still show some excitement for it.”
A part of me saying he’s just saying that, because it says “Yes, I’m sick of ‘Mr. Brightside'” can be bad for business. But after the killers ended this concert with “Mr. Brightside,” and it suddenly seems impossible to have any sick to play a song IT a different reaction. Not only do people sing. They sing like their six beers deep in Karaoke Night. Or sitting alone in the car after a terrible day. This is an orgasm of adulsion for one of the most famous Rock anthems in the 21st century. And at that moment, all my questions were answered. I realized that murderers, in fact, bad.
