Brains to people who write an essay with chatgpts less involved than people blocked from using any online tools for the task, found the study. The investigation about a wider activity to determine if artificial intelligence (AI) makes us sluggish.
Computer scientists Nataliya Kosmyna at MIT Media Lab of University students using university essays using a chatbot or not any internet at all. Although the main result cannot be changed, some of the findings of the study are more interesting: For example, the team saw the sagarks for the initials of the brainwashing tasks even if the tool was later taken.
VOICE Some posts about studying online platformsThe cosmyna is careful to say that results should not be filled. This study could not be done and did not show “vain in the brain, no foolishness, no brains on vacation,” the cosmyna laughed. It only includes fewer participants in a short time and cannot solve when custom chatbot will be used to keep our thinking for a long time, or how to respond to other AI’s other tasks. “We don’t have answers to this paper,” Kosmyna said. The job was posted in front of the Preprint Server review of the Preprint Server Arxiv on 10 June.

Easy Esesays
Kosmyna’s team recruited 60 students, 18 to 39, from five universities around the town of Boston, Massachusetts. Researchers ask them for 20 minutes of acting a short essay to answer questions, such as “we should always say before we speak.”
Participants are divided into three groups: one used chatgpt, powered by the great model of openii GPP-4o, as a source of information for their essays; Another used Google to seek for material (with no assistance AI-Assist); And the third is forbidden to go online. Finally, 54 participants wrote the essays that answered three questions while in their assigned group, and then 18 was assigned to a new group to write a new essay, in one of the subjects they had previously stated.
Each student is wearing a commercial covered cap, collected by the electroencephalography (EEG) reading their writing. These headses measure minor voltage changes from brain activity and can show how broad regions of the brain ‘tell each other.
Students who wrote the essays using only their brain showing the most powerful, entangled connection to brain regions from behind their brain front, place that makes the decision. They too, unpredictable, especially quoted from their own essays when researchers asked after.
Google Group, by comparison, has a strong activation of known areas associated with visual and memory process. And the chatbot group shows the minimum connecting brain during the task.
Too much connect to the brain don’t have to be good or bad, Kosmyna said. Overall, further brain activity can be a sign that a person involves a task, or can be a sign of thinking, or an indication that the person who has been overloaded with ‘cognitive overload’.
Lost creativity?
Interestingly, if participants initially use chatgpt for their essays quit writing without online tools online, but not at the same level as participants without tools from the beginning.
“This evidence prompts a concern that many creative researchers have AI – especially in generations of creativity in Georgetown University in Georgetown University in Washington DC.
But only 18 people are involved in the last part of the study, green notes, which increase uncertainty to those who know. He also said that there are other explanations for observations: for example, these students are also written to a subject that is different from the new topic requirements.
Horny, the study also shows that the transfer of a chatbot will write an essay after which previously composed any online connectivity – the opposite, your expectations. It suggests that it may be important to wonder if AI tools are introduced by students to develop their experience, as Kosmyna. “Time can be important.”
Many educational scholars are optimistic about using chatbots as Effective, personalized tutors. Guido Makransky, a Psychologist of the University of Copenhagen, saying that these tools are best if they hold the questions that can meditate.
“It’s an interesting role, and I can see why it’s a lot of attention,” Makrannsky said. “But in the real world, students should and should be with AI in a different way.”
