As the summer approaches and ends the school year, schools around the country are concerned about the coming year and the Federal Cuts that may come with the destruction of the US education department.
Anxiety is more likely to force consideration of a report released in January at national analysis of education in the fourth and eighth United States graduates continue to decrease. In the last year, their skills were rejected by 2 points compared to 2022. In fact, 19 states have a fourth grade of reading national average of 257.
What we know about education data that often has a reduced summer reading scores, which mean “summer slide.” Data from the Northwest Evaluation Association shows that the third to fifth graders will lose 20% of their school years.
This type of data hits teachers, including administrators, very difficult. What else can we do?
As we seek answers, what is lost in discussion is that many variables influence the results of reading and why they can be enthusiastic, especially for young readers.
If young people cannot read enough, their reading results will always waste or give up. Average teaching time for a student in the United States 5.7 hours a day. Read represents only one side of that time. If the only time young people read books when they are at school, reading marks across the country does not improve.
Now more than the first, it is important that our young people will continue to read the whole summer. For students who did not attend the summer school, it is important that parents and carers teach the times for reading their children, even on vacation. That means put some limits on using devices. If the family is traveling, requiring reading can be useful.
Neuropsychy services and education for children and adolescents, a practice of New England, recommend that children read at least 20 minutes after school all day. This is exposed to 1.8 million words in a school year. During the summer rest, keeping that practice can have a great impact on reading effectiveness for students, which can prevent some of the loss of reading that occurred during the summer’s rest.
Having young people do not only visit the library but also obtain the recommended library card. The American library association remains formed academic cards. Through the summer, many libraries host the events and activities of participating in young people and encourage them to be readers throughout life.
A lot of work should be done. We can start by making some young people keep getting a book and read in the summer.
