The moon dust may not harm people as thoughts, with a new experiment showing the routine air pollution on a busy road more toxic.
“Results contribute to the safety case for returning to people the moon“says Brian Oliver, a different professor of life sciences at the University of Technology Sydney, in a statement.
Concerns about moon dust poisoning stood during Apollo’s missions. Lunar dust is sacrificed, allowing it to follow the suits of astronauts. After astronauts pulling inside their lunar lander after a month of moonwal, the dust became a plane of the cabin and led for about 24 hours. Apollo 17 Astronaut Harrison Schmitt has described it like “lunar hay fever,” with stunning eyes, sneezing and sore throat.
In addition, back to WORLDApollo surgeon reporting similar problems after beating used spacesuits. In some cases, they report that symptoms are worsening after each mission, suggesting that repeated exposure to lunar dust increases the havoc.
However, anecdotal evidence is not a measure of the possibility of harm that the dust can with people. So Michaela Smith, who is a PHD student at the University of Technology Sydney Research Group, looking for.
Smith made the experiments using two lunar simulants – Refls of real lunar dust, which it was more ancient mountains of the moon and the more ancient mountains of the moon and indeed. Simulant particles are less than 2.5 microns (million meters), slight enough to swallow and then trapped in the lungs air. To represent the lungs, Smith introduced the simulant dust in two different types of mudstic cells, which are cells and lower regions, in fact.
Smith then held the same experiment but with the airborne partulate objects entered from a busy Sydney Sydney, and compare the effects of lunar dirt.
Smith knows that while the irregular form and moderate lunar dust is still upset the lungs, its effects are smaller than air pollution.
“It is important to recognize between a physical irritant and a toxic substance,” says Smith. “Our findings suggest that while lunar dust can cause some immediate irritation of airways, it is not dangerous for materials such as silica as Silica aw (as in a constrained area).”
This is the good news for NASA, who is still getting the challenges of the moon’s moon’s dust seriously as they plan on Artemis 3 Mission to see people come back to the moon face for the first time since 1972.
For example, a strategy is coming to the astronaut spacesuit outside the Lunar Lander, and astronauts enter and leave suits within the cabin. However thanks to the work of Smith, the moon’s dust problem may not be so severe as expected.
