Britain is one step closer to merciful, good death for all | Kim Leadbeater

I relieved and enjoyed in historical vote on the assisted death of the Commons house today. The way is long and hard, and I know that many others come to that trip since I have never been an MP. The question is when the offering of people at the end of their life is first raised Parliament in 1936 – Almost a century ago.

Since then, illnesses are finally pleading people who often begged MPs to listen to their simple aspirations with control and autonomy at the end of their lives. A courageous few who earned their cases of courts, even while they faced the hope of their own close and unavoidable deaths. Judges say this is for parliament to decide. Today, in the end, the home of the Commons responded, and responded to determined to identify justice in their cause.

while Get this bill Commons stages, I feel the seriousness of their grief and that boldly and politely ask that their own death should be a good, at the time they choose. For them I am and my fellows with lots of time and trouble to make sure we put before the law of parliament appropriate for purpose While protecting all, but especially the weakest of society, from any risk of coercion or pressure.

Making that work through the private member bill process is never straight. But that’s how the issues of conscience are in our democracy. To do so I have the ability to benefit from the skill of the best and dedicated government officials, lawyers and soldiers dragons in our democracy often not noticed. The government is right neutral, but its hard work has helped give me confidence that the law now continues to house to gentlemen for more thinking.

I also support MPs in total political division at home by commons and that is a good rewarding experience. Also confirmed that in this issue, as many more, it is possible to work on political opponents and that, In my sister’s wordsJo Cox, “We have many more … than to divide us.”

I believe that by working together a shared commitment does not only get this reform, but do it carefully, responsible, we have made the work sent us to Westminster. If other political arguments are now and the day have been forgotten, this parliament will be remembered for many years to come for the decision we make. And this is my true belief that at that time the controversy on this scale disappear, just as other countries make this step long before us. And as it has issues that have previously contradicted but are now accepted as reasonable and fair, like the same marriage or a female choice of choice.

If this bill finally turned the law later this year it was still years to be implemented, even if I expected to delay as much as possible. It will come too far for many, including some of what I met on this journey. Their courage is unique and their selflessness is unique. They say to me: “I should not have the death I want, but if others come later saved the suffering and annoyance of a painful death then it is useful.”

Their voices were finally heard. Traveling is not over yet but the end is visible. I would be grateful if the vote was lost in another way. Not for me and my team and all who work hard on this bill, but for whose lives that were used to despair and withdraw.

I remember the Words in Desmond Tutu It was almost a decade when he said: “As I argued firmly for compassion and reasonable people who needed to be treated with the same mercy and reasonableness of their death.” It’s been a long time – for a long time – for us in the country to hear the words but they listen to us, and I believe it will remember as a proud day for the Parliament for the future.
